The Gentle Note | Why We Need to Stop Taking Our Business So Seriously
(And Start Playing Again)
“The opposite of play is not work. It is depression.” — Brian Sutton-Smith
I have a confession to make.
For the longest time, I thought everything I created for my business had to have a strict, measurable ROI. Every post needed a call-to-action. Every email needed to drive conversions. Every piece of content had to fit perfectly into a meticulously planned funnel.
If it didn’t directly contribute to the bottom line, it felt like a distraction. A waste of time.
But recently, I realized something important: When we optimize every single second of our creative output for efficiency and profit, we slowly drain the soul out of our work. We become content machines instead of creators. We lose the spark that made us want to start our own business in the first place.
This week, I decided to break my own rules.
Instead of building another strategic lead magnet or writing a highly optimized sales sequence, I built something completely different. I built a tiny, slightly unhinged, deeply soulful web app called “The Vibe Check Oracle.”
It doesn’t sell anything. It doesn’t solve a complex business problem. All it does is give you a funny, personalized “vibe” for the day (like “A caffeinated forest nymph who lost their wand but found a really good playlist”).
And you know what? Building it was the most fun I’ve had in weeks.
It reminded me of a crucial truth that we often forget in the hustle of entrepreneurship: Playfulness is not a distraction. It is a vital creative strategy.
When we allow ourselves to play—to create something just because it’s fun, beautiful, or silly—we open up new pathways in our brain. We reconnect with our intuition. We remind our audience that there is a real, breathing, joyful human behind the brand.
In a digital world that is becoming increasingly automated and optimized, playfulness is the ultimate pattern interrupt. It’s how we stand out. Not by being louder or more strategic, but by being more human.
So, my gentle invitation to you this week is this: Where can you inject a little more play into your business?
Maybe it’s writing an email that has absolutely no point other than to make your readers smile. Maybe it’s designing a graphic just because you love the colors. Maybe it’s building a silly little app that tells people their daily vibe.
Whatever it is, give yourself permission to create without an agenda. The ROI of joy is immeasurable.
With love and a playful spirit,
Anita
P.S. If you want to see what happens when I let myself play, keep an eye out for next Tuesday’s edition of The Drop. I’ll be sharing the “Vibe Check Oracle” with you—and showing you exactly how I built it using AI, without writing a single line of code. It’s going to be a fun one.

Girl... YAS! to all of this! I had a similar train of thought recently. I was in a space for months where I couldn't have fun or play time as a professional. The last few weeks I have again and being able to play in the creative sandbox is critical. It's even a category on my time tracking software.
We may be adults, but we still need to play in the sandbox for fun and flex our creativity.
Just have fun! Let loose. Don't be so serious all the time. Your soul, business, and life will thank you.
